What to Wear to Your First Range Day

May 13, 2026 Athena Kavis

You bought your first firearm. You signed up for a class. And now you're standing in your closet wondering what to actually wear.

You are not alone in this. It is one of the most common questions I get from new students, and the answer is simpler than you think.

The goal is comfort, function, and confidence. You want to move freely, stay safe, and feel like yourself.

Here is what I recommend:

A fitted top with a higher neckline. Crew necks, mock necks, and fitted tees are ideal. Avoid low necklines and loose scoop necks. Hot brass casings eject from the firearm and can land on exposed skin or fall into open collars. It happens, and it is not pleasant. A simple fitted top solves this completely.

Closed-toe shoes with solid footing. Sneakers or boots work perfectly. Leave the sandals, heels, and open-toe shoes at home. You want stable footing and full coverage.

Pants you can move in. Jeans, chinos, or athletic pants are all fine. Avoid anything so tight it restricts your stance or so loose it gets in the way. You will be standing, adjusting, and shifting your body throughout the session.

A belt. If you are practicing with a holster, a reinforced belt makes a significant difference in comfort and stability. Even if you are not holstering yet, wearing a belt helps you start thinking about how carry integrates into your wardrobe from day one.

Pull your hair back. A ponytail, braid, or clip keeps hair out of your face and away from equipment. You want zero distractions when you are focused on the fundamentals.

Skip the jewelry. Dangling earrings, long necklaces, and bracelets can interfere with your grip, your stance, or your ear protection. Keep it minimal.

What you do not need: tactical pants, special gear, camo anything, or a complete wardrobe overhaul. You just need clothes that let you focus on learning.

The best thing you can wear to your first range day is whatever makes you feel comfortable and ready to learn. Everything else is just details.

Show up as yourself. That is more than enough.
